Billboard Changes Country Chart Rules – Everyone But Swift Screwed!

14 October 2012 3 Comments

Today Billboard announced that it would be changing the rules regarding placement on their Country charts. Instead of just taking into consideration radio play (which it now counts all stations for placement, not just country…), it is now counting digital sales and hits off of Spotify. Because of this sudden change, Taylor Swift’s ‘We Are Never’, which is undeniably pop, is now #1, with her unreleased-to-radio single ‘Red’ following behind it. Won’t Swift ALWAYS be #1 now? What does that mean for Gloriana, Lady A, TBP? I don’t exactly know. Whether or not I continue to feature BB on my site is another question. This does not change Mediabase. What do you think about this? Read the full story.

Is this fair to those country artists who AREN'T crossover?

I have wanted a change for a while, but this just went way too far. Get rid of crossover radio and streaming. I think streaming will have its time in country music, but that day has not come yet. This really only favors Taylor Swift, and will make it near impossible for new artists to have a hit and is probably the death sentence of Georgia Strait having #1’s. Mediabase has become much better, but the best country music charts are on http://www.countryyourway.com. They use the same data as billboard, but combine things in a fair way, unlike billboard is now doing. I would stop reporting BB charts on your site and look at using CYW’s charts!

I agree with you 100%. Thanks for the rec on the new site. I am going to start giving my main focus to Mediabase, as I have in the past, and check out CYW. Let’s hope this new petition helps us fix this huge mistake!

The writer made a little mistake. It’s the country remix of Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” that went to #1 on the Billboard Country Songs Chart, not the original complete pop version that’s found on her new CD “Red”.
